Working with Self Regulation Sunshine
Life is full of glimmers. Tiny moments of joy and laughter and happiness. But parenting neurodivergent children and little ones with big behaviours can dim that glow. Parents can find help for their children and themselves at our Growth Groups, where we teach young and old some simple skills to improve executive function and self regulation.
Join us and become empowered and confident to bring glimmers of calm to family life.
I’m Jasmin, early years and primary teacher, mother of three neurodivergent young boys, including twins who were born early. I have a FIFO husband. And now I am building a business to support people like me who have to work hard, to get the help we need, to keep our heads above water.
Parenting neurodivergent children, and those with tricky behaviours can be a challenge. We are bogged down by the daily struggles and overwhelmed with the deficit model of diagnosis which is necessary to get NDIS support. Everywhere we turn, there is another person or company promising a quick fix, or a one-size-fits-all solution. And it feels like none of them want to acknowledge the duality of this life that we didn’t get to choose. Yes, we love our children and we have a vision for a thriving little person who will grow up to be a vibrant part of a community. Yes, we are burnt out by the need to be constantly co-regulating our little people, while juggling a career, household, appointments and overwhelm. Yes, we need help.
THERE IS NO QUICK FIX. There is no simple solution. If there was, I would be happily ever after, teaching children their ABC’s. I am here to show you small steps toward finding more glimmers during a season in our lives that can easily overwhelm without the right support.
Self Regulation Sunshine is collaborating with Think Play Say to present growth groups twice a week for our young clients and their families. These NDIS goal oriented small group sessions are designed to support children and their families with practical strategies to improve all forms of self regulation: emotional, physical and cognitive.
We will achieve this using two modalities: RAMSR and Conscious Discipline. Both are evidence-backed models designed to improve executive function (EF) and self regulation. RAMSR is a music and movement program which challenges EF in a fun and engaging way. It’s been designed and further developed by a team of researchers at QUT. In the Conscious Discipline (CD) model, we bring an holistic approach to the senses of safety, connection and problem-solving, guiding parents and children to understand the three parts of the brain that govern our behaviour. The multidisciplinary brain state model by Dr Becky Bailey is based on the neuro developmental science researched by Daniel Siegel, Bruce Perry, Louis Cozolino and others. This research aligns polyvagal and attachment theories to help us all understand our behaviour.
